Sotheby’s London is pleased to present ‘A Scholar’s Relish’, its second online Chinese art sale following an enthusiastically received first sale in 2018. The sale comprises of objects for the scholar’s studio and scholar’s playthings such as bamboo root carvings, soapstone, brush pots and water droppers. Highlights in this sale include a group of bronze incense burners. Many of the objects on offer in this sale were originally purchased in the 1980s at London’s Portobello market, where keen-eyed collectors searched for choice pieces from around the world, in this case Chinese scholar’s objects. Like the fabled market, ‘A Scholar’s Relish’ brings together a diverse audience to share the excitement of treasure hunting on the contemporary online auctioning platform.
