Tang Dynasty (618-907)
Historical research considers the time of the Tang dynasty as a high point in Chinese history. It was founded by the general Li Yuan, who was known as Emperor Gaozu and stood in the shadow of his son Li Shimin (Emperor Taizong). Many foreign merchants and warriors shaped the townscapes of this period and brought novel inventions and new impressions to China. A new administration was created and the officials were divided into nine ranked classes, although money and origin continued to determine the rank. The Tang dynasty was interrupted by Wu Zetian’s Zhou dynasty (690-705). After her overthrow, Emperor Xuanzong reigned the dynasty. His reign is also regarded as the golden age of peace, culture and scholarship, preceding the eventual sudden collapse of the dynasty.
