Lot Details Description the base with a six-character mark in underglaze blue within a double circle Height 14? in., 36.3 cm Condition report Provenance Collection of Stephen Junkunc, III (d. 1978). Catalogue note Painted in a gorgeous spectrum of vivid blues and greens, the present vase is a particularly fine example of Kangxi period porcelain. Exploiting the volatile properties of underglaze copper red pigments that overfire to produce a subtle green tone, the present design of sea creatures and aquatic plants is rendered with a remarkable degree of naturalism and vibrancy. Such delicate control of pigmentation, fine brushwork and overall balance of composition are found only on the most prestigious wares of the period and would have required the expertise of a master craftsman.? Gliding along the bulbous belly of the vase are four vividly painted fish. Scholars have suggested that this configuration – likely depicting mackerel (li), whitefish (baiyu), silver carp (lian) and Chinese perch (jue) – may serve as a rebus for the adage qingbai lianjie ('pure and incorruptible'), signifying a wish for scholarly success through honest means.? Kangxi period vases of this quality, color palette and danping form are rare. Compare pieces of other forms, decorated with aquatic scenes in underglaze blue and red, including a steep-sided bowl dated to 1672, in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Gugong Bowuyuan cang Qingdai yuyao ciqi [Porcelains from the Qing dynasty imperial kilns in the Palace Museum collection], vol. I, part. I, Beijing, 2005, pl. 6; a bulbous fish jar, finely decorated mostly in copper red, also from the Palace Museum, illustrated in Qing Porcelain of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong Periods from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, pl. 21; its pair from the collection of the Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art. Chinese Ceramics IV, Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 54, sold in our London rooms, 15th December 1987, lot 193, and again at Christie's New York, 20th March 1997, lot 93; and a floral dish with leaping carp preserved in the Umezawa Kinenkan, Tokyo, illustrated in Sekai tōji zenshū / Ceramic Art of the World, vol. 15, Tokyo, 1983, pl. 144. For other important Kangxi wares depicting aquatic life, compare a blue and white fishbowl in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Gugong Bowuyuan cang Qingdai ciqi lei xuan [Selected Chinese Ceramics from the Palace Museum], vol. I: Qing Shunzhi Kangxi chao qinghua ci [Blue and White Ceramics in Shunzhi and Kangxi Periods], Beijing, 2004, pl. 251; a doucai vase and cover of Kangxi mark and period from the collection of the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Liu Liang-yu, A Survey of Chinese Ceramics: Ch’ing Official and Popular Wares, Taipei, 1991, p. 55; and a doucai dish of related design illustrated in Chen Ke Leung (Kelun), Kangxi ci / Porcelain of the Kangxi, Shanghai, 1998, p. 52.
