Lot Details Description (2) Length 10? in., 25.8 cm Condition report Provenance Collection of Dr. Herman Charles (1882-1954), acquired in Hong Kong in the 1930s. Catalogue note Intricately carved with a delicate lotus scroll and dragons swirling freely, as if flying through the cloudy white below, the present lot is an exceptionally fine example of eighteenth-century jadework. Knives of this design were originally used by Manchu men for hunting and cutting their own meat at meals. This practice, in contrast to the 'decadent' Han Chinese habit of eating their meat pre-cut, became a key signifier of Manchu identity, separating the Qing nobility from wider society. When eating sacrificial pork, women too were expected to cut up their own meat as a sign of their nomadic origins and such knives often formed part of the dowries of princesses and even maidservants; see Splendors of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong, Chicago, 2004, pp 197-201 alongside an illustration of a jade handled knife of Qianlong mark and period, cat. no. 248. It is very rare to find a matching set of jade sheath and handle, let alone one so intricately crafted from pure white jade. Compare a related matching set bearing a four-character Qianlong mark, sold alongside a pair of golden chopsticks at Bonhams Hong Kong, 28th November 2017, lot 23. Compare also a small number of knives of this type with a jade handle and intricately carved sheath of other materials, including a knife with a wood sheath decorated with flowering lotus scrolls, from the collection of Dr. Ip Yee, included in the exhibition Bamboo and Wood Carvings of China and the East, Spink and Son Ltd., London, 1979, cat. no. 277 and sold in the Hong Kong rooms, 19th November 1984, lot 64; another with jade handle and diaper-carved bamboo sheath, sold at Christie's New York, 21st September 2004, lot 76; another of a more Mughal style with an openwork gold sheath adorned with bands of red glass paste, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 8th April 2010, lot 1812; and another with a matching sharkskin sheath from the collection of George C. Stone, now preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession no. 36.25.975a, b). Compare also a gilt bronze knife with a related white jade sheath adorned with a chi dragon in high relief among lotus scrolls, sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 7th April 2009, lot 1704. These knives were designed to be worn from the belts of Manchu emperors and officials. Compare two belts in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated together with various accessories including related knives, in Qing dai fushi zhanlan tulu / Catalogue of the Exhibition of Ch'ing Dynasty Costume Accessories, Taipei, 1986, pp 114-15, nos 32 and 33.
