Langyaohong (Sang de Boeuf)
The method of porcelain decoration in the Sang de Boeuf style was developed at the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, East China, under the supervision of Lang Tingji (1663-1715) during the Kangxi reign (1662-1722). The thick and vitreous deep bright red glaze gives the Sang de Boeuf porcelain its distinctive appearance. The traditional Sang de Boeuf glazing technique inspired European artists throughout the ages.
HU
The vessel type HU was originally used as a wine container and appears in many variations and modifications. Examples with a squared section are usually referred to as FANGHU. The HU has usually a bulbous, vase-shaped lower part surmounted by a tapering neck. The vessel can be carried by the two ring handles on the sides, which sometimes have the shape of animals. The cover of the vase was also used as a vessel. Since the 5th century metal inlays decorating the exterior were particularly common.
Deer
The deer is a popular and auspicious motif in Asian art since the late Shang and Zhou dynasties. It is part of the Taoist cult of immortality, which said that a deer was able to find the ‘mushroom of immortality’. The deer is also a symbol of longevity. Because it can reach old age, its renewable antlers are believed to have healing powers. According to Chinese legends, the age of the deer is visible in the color of its fur. Thus a 1000-year-old dear has a gray fur whereas a 5000-year-old deer has a white fur. In Korean legends, the deer has also functions as a mediator between humans and gods.
