Lot Details Description Himalayan Art Resources item no.?1928. Height 14? in., 37.5 cm; Length 11? in., 28.5 cm Condition report Provenance American Private Collection, acquired in the 1990s. Catalogue note The present thangka, depicting Dragpei Tsenchen (1376-1421), Fifth Abbot of Riwoche, is the finest preserved extant example from a set commissioned for Riwoche Monastery circa 1550. Others from the set include a portrait of Jigten Wangchuk (1454-1532), Eighth Abbot of Riwoche and a portrait of Kyualwa, Second Abbot of Takyung, sold in these rooms, 22nd March 2018, lots 939 and 940, from the Richard and Magdalena Ernst Collection. Both are illustrated and discussed by Jane Casey, Taklung Painting: A Study in Chronology, Chicago, 2023, cat. nos 94 and 95. Jane Casey also expounds the biography of Dragpei Tsenchen, ibid., p. 1101, recounting how he received full monastic ordination in 1398, and acceded to the abbot’s throne in 1418. He was considered a reincarnation of Sangye On, and had a patron-priest relationship in India, China, Nepal and Tibet. The painting vividly depicts the Riwoche Abbot wearing layers of gold-patterned red robes and a cap with upturned lappets, with cushions behind within a halo, set against multi-colored stylized mountains, with Tashipel at the center in the upper register flanked by mahasiddhas and Padmasambhava on the far right, with mahasiddhas and Kagyu progenitors in the side registers and five Taklung hierarchs below, the reverse with an inscription in red within a stupa.? The inscriptions on the reverse read: na mo rad na gu ru rad na pra dznya bha dra hUm Homage to Sanggye Yarjon! I ???????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? Victorious over negative emotions, who spontaneously accomplished the inseparable Three Buddha Bodies, I pray to Drakpa Tsechen, to bless us to achieve the welfare for oneself and others. ?
