No. 496, full-page illus. in the catalog; ''When the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts was reopened on April 17, 1947, after the partial destruction of World War II, Johanna Rabe was one of the first to enroll and one of the young women who were finally able to study. She was introduced to artistic work early on by her uncle, the sculptor, painter and graphic artist Ludwig Godenschweg (1889-1942). In his studio in Dresden-Pappritz, she met his friends, her future professors Wilhelm Rudolf (1889-1982) and Wilhelm Lachnit (1899-1962). After graduating from high school in Radebeul in 1941, she began an antiquarian bookselling apprenticeship in Dresden, was drafted into the labor service the following year, attended the technical school for high school teachers in Hellerau in 1943/44, became a gymnastics teacher there, switched to high-voltage power plant construction in Radebeul in 1946 to work as a drill operator, which certainly gave her a good chance of being enrolled as an art student, as working-class children and workers were preferred in East Germany after the war catastrophe. In the middle of her studies, Johanna married - now called Starke - and had her first child in 1949; the other two followed in 1953 and 1955. Her husband's vocation brought the family to Leipzig. There, influenced by the Dresden school of painting, she remained an outsider after promising beginnings. '' (quote: Rita Jorek, 2019, website der Stadt Leipzig) Children dressed for carnival, 1962, oil/ board, signed and dated lower left, encsribed and entitled at reverse. Exhibition label: Dresden 1962. original frame. 109 x 74 cm.
