A RARE LIMESTONE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA, XIANGTANGSHAN CAVES, NORTHERN QI DYNASTY, 6TH CENTURY

China, 550-577. Finely modeled, standing barefoot on a rounded plinth atop a lotus base, the figure holds a lotus bud in the right hand while the left gently grasps the long dhoti, tied at the waist with sashes and ribbons cascading to the knees. His serene face is characterized by heavy-lidded eyes, softly arched brows, and bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by pendulous earlobes. The hair is neatly parted in the middle, crowned with an ornate tiara centered by a diminutive figure of the Amitabha Buddha, and backed by a foliate nimbus.

Northern Qi dynasty figures, such as this one, are distinctive for their delicate modeling, composed expressions, and refined elegance, reflecting the dynasty's emphasis on spiritual grace and artistic sophistication.

Provenance: From a private estate in Northern France. This has been in the same house for more than 70 years, according to family repute.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Significant old wear, obvious losses, structural fissures, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, nicks, scratches, and chips. Remnants of ancient pigments.

Dimensions: Height 95 cm

The present sculpture is thought to be from the Xiangtangshan caves (lit. ‘Mountain of Echoing Halls’), a group of Buddhist cave shrines established near the capital at Ye, and on the road leading between Ye and the Jincheng, the seat of the Gao family, which was much traveled during Eastern Wei and Northern Qi. The Xiangtangshan caves are divided among three sites where the major portion of cave-construction activity was completed in the Northern Qi dynasty. The caves at these sites were hollowed from limestone cliffs and carved with images of Buddhist deities, architectural and ornamental elements, and the texts of Buddhist scriptures. These elements represent various important religious concepts and ideals and can be related to popular belief and practice, the scholarship of scriptural texts, and teaching activity of eminent monks of the time. Only a few dated dedicatory inscriptions survive from the period, and no contemporary records document the caves' origins. However, later inscriptions, along with the carved images, offer valuable evidence for dating the works.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related limestone figure of a bodhisattva, dated to the Northern Qi dynasty, 87 cm high, in the Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University, accession number S3514. Compare a closely related limestone figure of Guanyin, holding similar attributes, Northern Qi dynasty, 6th century, 88.9 cm high, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number A.7-1913.
