A ROCK CRYSTAL CARVING OF A DUCK, QING DYNASTY

China, 1750-1850. Finely carved from a choice section of remarkably clear rock crystal, the duck looks directly ahead, seated in a recumbent pose with its legs tucked beneath and the boldly incised wings resting at its side, the tail feathers similarly detailed, the head with round incised eyes, long beak, and a prominent curved crest.

Provenance: The collection of Travers Christmas Humphreys, thence by descent. Travers Christmas Humphreys, QC (1901-1983) was a British barrister, who later became a judge at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. He wrote a number of works on Mahayana Buddhism and in his day was the best-known British convert to Buddhism. In 1924 he founded what became the London Buddhist Society, which was to have a seminal influence on the growth of the Buddhist tradition in Britain. His former home in St John's Wood, London, is now a Buddhist temple.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and microscopic nibbling to edges.

Weight: 174.3 g
Dimensions: Length 9.9 cm

With a nicely fitted hardwood base, dating from around 1900 or even earlier. (2)
