Nepalese Copper Gilt Stupa - 19th/20th century, copper alloy fire-gilded, large turquoise inlays, encrusted with corals, turquoises and beryls, Nepalese''stupa with eyes'' on a lushly ornamented relief base, an elaborately framed niche to one side of the ''harmika ''(= dome), which is placed on an ivory ring, above the dome rises the long ''spira'' on a small cube featuring the incised pairs of Buddha eyes looking out from the four sides also known as wisdom eyes. They symbolize the all-seeing ability of the Buddha, stupa topped by a large stylised lotos flower carrying the wishful jewel, to each side a wing-shaped floral-ornamented silver plate pennant, the round stand with the Tibetan inscription ''Om Mani Peme Hung Hrih''-the mantra of the unconditional loving compassion as well as the personification of bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), sealed base decorated with a Vishvaajra motif, silver layer worn, gilding rubbed at the edge of the lower part, 1 gemstone missing, weight c.1900g, H.c.33,5cm, Dm.c.23cm, base has been opened Provenance Private Collection Germany
