An Arab pearl merchant’s wood chest
19th-20th century
The box is affixed with a brass lockplate and two handles; the upper edge of the cover is with a carved petal band, the underside of the cover is carved in low relief with a scrolling fruiting foliate design. The interior of the chest is fitted with an upper shelf of comprised of various compartments, the centre compartment lifts out to reveal the body of the chest underneath. Accompanied with a brass and buffalo horn scale and its copper box and cover; and two small copper bowls.

Compare two pearl merchant’s boxes one on display from the collection of Sultan Al Owais at the Pearl Museum, Dubai, and one from the Hussain Alfardan Collection, Doha exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Pearls, 21 September 2013 – 19 January 2014.
