拍品描述 翻译
KOSAKA AYAYUKI I: A RARE WOOD ‘NATAMAME AND FROGS’ BOKUTO (DOCTOR'S SWORD)

By Kosaka Ayayuki I (1941-1997), signed Ayayuki 礼之
Japan, second half of the 20th century, Showa period (1926-1989)

Well carved as a long bean pod borne on a leafy curling stem forming the cord attachment, the body realistically rendered with undulations and carved in high relief with two small frogs, one carefully observing a fly on a leaf, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Finely lacquered to heighten the natural grain of the wood. Signed to the back within an oval reserve AYAYUKI.

LENGTH 44 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.

With a wood tomobako inscribed Ichii kibori, bokuto hashirakake, Natamame ni kaeru no zu [A wood sword (bokuto) as a hashirakake (an object to hang on the wall) in the shape of Natamame (sword-bean) and a frog, made with Ichii (Japanese yew) wood] 一位木彫、木刀柱掛け、鉈豆に蛙の図. The underside of the cover signed AYAYUKI saku [Made by Ayayuki] 礼之作 with the seal AYAYUKI 礼之.

Natamame (Canavalia gladiate, or sword bean) is believed to ward off evils, while the frog is associated with good luck, wealth, and fertility. In combination, the motifs employed in this bokuto are highly auspicious.

During the Edo period, with the end of the civil rivalry between the Shogun and his enemies, carrying arms became obsolete in Japan. The wearing of small dummy swords by the Samurai was imitated by doctors, artists, and other professionals as a symbol of social and professional status. During the 18th and 19th centuries the bokuto lost its sword-like appearance and size and took on a more abstract and decorative form, continuing into the Meiji period and beyond.
