Description

Of flat octagonal form, each side divided into panels, the surface of which is worked in the style of old and somewhat corroded bronze using green pigment, displaying in the two largest panels the characters “eki” (station) and “rei” (bell) in seal script. Signed Matsuda Sukenaga. Wood ojime in the shape of a small magatama. Wood netsuke of a bell in the shape of a bronze chicken, inside a small movable ball, on both sides a cartouche with the inscription: Tenpyō jūki tsuchinoe-tora (738) kugatsu (9th month) and Matsuura sha shahō (treasure of the Matsuura Shrine), signed Sukenaga. Width 5.1 cm. Small wooden storage box, inscribed on the lid: Matsuda Sukenaga saku ekirei katachi inrō (inrō in the shape of an ekirei, made by Matsuda Sukenaga, 1800-1871); the line next to it erased. The same text on the paper label on the narrow side of the lid. At the bottom a paper label with seal reading: Hida kuni Yoshiki-gun Kokufu-mura Sugishita in (possibly label of the former owner named Sugishita from Yoshiki in Hida). Along with another wooden box, on the outside of the lid inscribed: Matsuda Sukenaga saku ekirei katachi inrō, and on the reverse of the lid with a long inscription dated: Meiji 4 (1871), 3rd month, 4th day, at the age of 72. Ekirei (literally: station bell) were bells given by the government to traveling officials and messengers who travelled at high speed from station to station.
