Description

Seated in a padmasana on a double lotus throne adorned with large petals and two pearl strings, his hands held in bhumisparsha mudra. A nine-pronged vajra, laying in front of him atop the moon disc, serves as a meaningful symbol of this attainment. Confusion in labeling seated bronze figures of Buddha Akshobhya and Buddha Shakyamuni is a common issue. This misconception arises from the similar appearances of both figures in their Buddha-form, as well as the misinterpretation of the occasionally accompanying vajra symbol. According to major experts in the field, such as Ulrich von Schroeder and Jeff Watt, a seated Buddha figure can only be identified as Akshobhya if the vajra is standing upright on his palm or impressed into his throne-seat, further supported by an elephant—his animal attendant. As von Schroeder notes, “If the Buddha is seated on a pedestal bearing a vajra, he is identified as Buddha Vajrasana” (Buddhist Sculpture in Tibet, Vol. II, Hong Kong, 2001, p. 1028). The vajra holds a three-fold symbolism connected to the story of Shakyamuni’s enlightenment: vajrasana—the position he took; vajra samadhi—the meditative state in which he entered nirvana; and Vajrasana—the location in Bodhgaya where this event occurred.
