''In July 1993, I made the long journey to China via Beijing and Nanchang to the city of Jingdezhen, made famous over the years as the centre of excellence for Chinese porcelain manufacturing. By the time of the Ming Dynasty, Jingdezhen had already gained a reputation for producing China’s finest porcelain.
My mission at the time was to work with some of the best Chinese manufacturers in order to produce ranges of ‘Iznik’ and European decorated porcelain, largely hand -painted onto traditional Chinese Planters, and following my visit, several containers of product from Jingdezhen were were successfully sold in the U.K market. Marketing was still in a development phase in China in the early 1990’s and the subsequent connection to a buoyant market place quickly bore fruit.
Once designs taken to China had been produced and the first orders placed, I was honoured and presented with an excellent vase from the factory showroom and before my departure a hearty banquet was enjoyed by all involved with the project.
In 1994 my third child and first son, Cameron James Turnbull, was born on October 16th, and soon after, and as a great honour, I received Mr. Liu’s Laughing Buddha as a remarkable goodwill gesture from the factory. Mr. Liu was working in Jingdezhen at the time of my visit and I was told that the markings on the Buddha were a sign of great luck and good fortune to mark the birth of my son.
My trip to China in 1993, it’s legacy, and my children’s lives have all been blessed by good fortune and I remain a consultant in International Marketing to this day.''
