拍品描述 翻译
A WHITE JADE ‘DRAGON’ PENDANT, CHINA, 18TH CENTURY

Of flattened form, carved and pierced as a one-horned dragon with sinuous body finely detailed to each side with neatly incised C- and S-scrolls. The translucent jade is of a pale hue with icy inclusions.

Provenance: The private collection of Dr. Laurent Joseph Gaide, and thence by descent in the same family. Dr. Laurent Joseph Gaide (1870-1960) was a military doctor who served almost entirely in French Indochina, mainly in Tonkin from 1894 to 1917, and eventually as a director of the public health services throughout the colony, ending his career as Inspecteur Général. He published several notable medical papers. In retirement, he devoted his time and efforts to Indochinese studies.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minuscule nibbling, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into fine hairline cracks over time.

Weight: 45.5 g
Dimensions: Length 7.2 cm

The dragon is one of the most ancient of Chinese symbols and features prominently in Chinese mythology. Scholars believe that it evolved from the totems of early Chinese tribes. During the Imperial era, the dragon was the symbol of power and the five-clawed dragon represented the Emperor himself. The dragon is also one of the four divine animals, and represents chen, the fifth of the twelve earthly branches. People today still hope that their sons attain the power of a dragon, ‘wang zi cheng long’.
