LARGE Yuan blue and white Chinese porcelain charger. Of a shallow dish body with a flora petal-barbed rim. The central medallion well-painted in soft violet-blue tones with composite chrysanthemum floral blooms, borne on slender interlaced vines within a octagonal flori-form ruyi shaped petal cartouche of double-lines conforming to the gently fluted cavetto. Band of floral spray bordered along the outer rim. The exterior with stylized lotus blooms in arrays decorating on each lobed petal. A characteristic Heaped and piled effect?, the underglaze cobalt blue concentrates in certain areas, bubbling through the surface of the glaze and turning a deep blue-black. This inadvertently gave texture, energy and shading to the design. The chrysanthemum signifies the tenth month of the lunar calendar. The chrysanthemum, one of the Four Gentlemen, blooms late and in facing the winter symbolizes people who maintain their virtue despite adversity and temptation. The underside left un-glazed revealed the grayish-creme base, with orange-brown and dark-grayish firing spots.
