A FINE REPOUSSé SILVER AND COPPER GRAIN MANDALA SET, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Superbly crafted in five stackable sections. The associated, probably earlier base with a solid top and decorated to the sides with panels enclosing dancing goddesses within a lobed areole, surrounded by foliate blossoms. Each ring decorated with sacred symbols borne on finely incised scrolling vines interspersed with foliate blossoms and enclosed within bands of key-fret. The silver finial, which symbolizes Mount Meru, is decorated with auspicious emblems including a dharmachakra, vajra, lotus blossom, and precious jewels.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and manufacturing irregularities. Some warping and minor dents. Few minute nicks and minuscule losses. Small dings and fatigue cracks. Minor touchups to the edges of the solid top.

Weight: 942.5 g (incl. liners, excl. rice)
Dimensions: Diameter 19.7 cm (at the widest), Height 26.7 cm (total)

The first open ring features attributes of the Eight Offering Goddess which are beauty, garlands, song, dance, flowers, incense, light, and perfume. The next ring features the Seven Emblems of Royalty, along with the vase of endless treasure. The Emblems of Royalty, also described as the seven precious possessions of the universal monarch (chakravartin), are the precious wheel, jewel, queen, minister, elephant, horse, and general. The smallest ring bears six images of auspicious symbols.

The act of offering wealth to the universe is the highest ritual expression of devotion in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. This grain mandala set consists of five components worked from copper and silver, which when stacked together with quantities of a small, valued particle – such as rice, barley, or other grains or pulses; powdered medicinal herbs or pills; or gemstones, pearls, or coins – collectively symbolize the offering of the entire universe, in the Buddhist ritual known as the mandala offering. Together, the imagery of the base, three rings, and finial represents Mount Meru – the axis mundi in Buddhist cosmology – and its surrounding universe, filled with the auspicious items being ritually offered.
