A related pair of black-ground, famille rose jars and covers of smaller size (17 ? in.), decorated with a similar design but with only peonies in the large panels as opposed to the cockerels on the present pair, is illustrated by J. Ayers in Chinese Ceramics, The Koger Collection, London, 1985, p. 153, and was once in the collections of James Garland and J. P. Morgan. Another noteworthy pair of similar size (24 in.) and shape, decorated with richly-enameled continuous scenes of cockerels and peonies on a white ground, was sold by the Yale University Art Gallery at Christie’s New York, 23-24 September 2021, lot 790.
