拍品描述 翻译
Khmer Empire, Banteay Srei style. Finely carved seated atop a ferocious feline beast, his hands pressed together in anjali mudra, his face with downcast expression and full lips, flanked by elongated lobes suspending pendeloque earrings, the hair pulled up into a high chignon secured by a band, all within a foliate niche surrounded by an elaborately carved mandorla of flame-like scrolling foliage. Provenance: Arnold H. Lieberman, Buddhist & Hindu Antiquities, New York, 2000. Raymond Handley, Los Altos Hills, California, acquired from the above, and thence by descent to his wife Marsha Vargas Handley. A copy of the invoice from Arnold Lieberman, dated 20 March 2000, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of USD 17,000 or approx. EUR 29,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Arnold Lieberman, known as 'The Grumpy Connoisseur', has been a fine art and antique dealer since the early 1970s and was on the board of directors of The Art and Antique Dealers League of America for ten years. Raymond G. Handley (1923-2009) partnered with Ray Renault in the 1950s to co-found one of California's oldest and most successful real estate development firms. They were pioneers in shaping the early landscape of Silicon Valley, developing buildings for major tech innovators such as Intel and Raytheon, laying the groundwork for the region's transformation into a global technology hub. Raymond Handley was a keen collector of art who traveled extensively, including the most remote parts of Papua New Guinea and Africa. In Mali, where his brother served as the Ambassador of the United States, he drilled more than fifty water wells for Dogon villages. His passion led him to establish Folk Art International/Xanadu Tribal Arts, an ethnographic art business which developed into the Xanadu Gallery in the late 1990s, located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building off Union Square, and continued by his widow Marsha Vargas Handley until her retirement in 2015. Having opened her first gallery in the Bay Area in 1973, she is an important figure in the Asian art world in her own right, serving as the president of the International Netsuke Society for over 16 years.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, natural imperfections, small losses, signs of weathering and erosion, few nicks, and encrustations, especially to the back.Weight: 63.2 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 68 cm (excl. stand), 75.5 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on an associated stand. (2)Banteay Srei is a 10th century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and Parvati. It is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. The buildings themselves are miniature in scale, unusually so, when measured by the standards of Angkorian construction. These factors have made the temple extremely popular with tourists, and have led to it being widely praised as a prime jewel of Khmer art.Translating to 'citadel of beauty', Banteay Srei is the only major temple at Angkor not built by a monarch but credited to two important courtiers, Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha. It lies near the hill of Phnom Dei, 25 km northeast of the main temple group that once belonged to the medieval capitals of Yasodharapura and Angkor Thom. Originally, it carried the name Tribhuvanamaheshvara - great lord of the threefold world - in reference to the Shaivite linga that served as its central religious image.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related mandorla antefix in the collection of the Angkor National Museum.
