Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence report issued by Oxford Authentication on 19 February 2025, based on sample no. C125b97, sets the firing date of the two samples taken between 1500 and 2400 years ago, consistent with the dating of the present lot. A copy of the report accompanies the lot.China, 25-220. The recumbent canine with its head turned to the side, ears pricked, and mouth agape. Openings are present at the ears and mouth, while the paws extend forward. The tail is flat-shaped, and the hollow body is covered in an even dark amber glaze.Provenance: The estate of Dr. Horacio Fabrega, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Offered at Freeman's, March 16th 2009, Lot 434, with an estimate of USD 12,000, or approx. Dr. Horacio Fabrega (1934-2022) was a psychiatrist, medical anthropologist and art collector. Fabrega met his wife Joan in an art history class at Penn university, sparking a lifelong passion for art. Together, they delved into diverse artistic traditions, with a special emphasis on Asian art that deepened their cultural understanding and appreciation.Condition: Good condition, with ancient wear, commensurate with age. Some glaze flaking, small chips, cracks, and few restored areas with associated touch-ups. All as expected from authentic Han dynasty excavations. Two small holes from sample drilling have been filled.Weight: 1,617 gDimensions: Length 35 cm, height 17.5 cmVividly detailed guard dogs such as the present example embodied the animus of a living animal and frequently appeared in burial complexes, where they warded off evil spirits and guarded both the tomb occupant and the material wealth that he or she brought into their afterlife. Literature comparison: Compare a related earthenware figure of a dog, also dating to the Eastern Han dynasty, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number SL.1.2017.28.2. Compare a glazed earthenware figure of a dog, dating to the Eastern Han dynasty, in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, object number 1983.1.
