拍品描述 翻译
China, 206 BC-AD 8. The rounded oblong body supported on a short pedestal foot and surmounted by a circular neck rising to an everted rim, expressively painted with numerous abstract 'yunwen' bands and scrolls in shades of red, white, cream, and light blue, with a red band encircling the neck.Provenance: From the estate of M. Loneux, Liege, Belgium, a dealer and collector active until the late 1990s.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, firing irregularities, few small chips, signs of weathering and erosion, and soil encrustations. The painting is exceptionally well-preserved on this one, which is it a rare find.Weight: 2.4 kgDimensions: Height 34.5 cm, Length 37.5 cmThe shape of this jar's body imitates that of a silkworm cocoon. The silk industry, dating back to the third millennium B.C.E., was an important source of revenue for the Chinese economy during the Han dynasty, with silk often used as soft currency in commerce and diplomacy. Since the breeding of silkworms was fraught with difficulties and secrecy, many superstitions arose surrounding it, with ceramics such as this one perhaps serving as funerary signs of this important practice, as well as a tacit symbol of wealth. The painted swirls are cloud-scrolls or yunwen and evoke the multiple meanings assigned to clouds by the ancient Chinese. Because clouds bring life-giving rain, one meaning of yunwen is good fortune. Bronze and lacquer ritual vessels were expensive commodities that only the privileged class could afford, but in the Han dynasty, ceramic funerary wares that simulated these luxurious vessels became a more affordable means of outfitting one's tomb, as a finished ceramic piece required far less fuel and specialized labor than a bronze or lacquer vessel. These earthenware ceramics date to the Western Han period (when the capital was located in modern-day Xian, Shaanxi province) and imitated ritual vessels with painted-lacquer decoration. Fired at relatively low temperatures, earthenware vessels are not fully vitrified and slightly porous, making them less than ideal as containers for daily use, but suitable as burial items. Few colored compounds can withstand kiln temperatures without alteration; in order to replicate the multiple bright colors and dynamic designs of painted lacquers, mineral pigments were applied to earthenware vessels after firing and are hence ''cold-painted.''Literature comparison:Compare a closely related cocoon shaped jar dated Western Han dynasty, 2nd-1st century BC, 27 cm wide, in the Harvard University Art Museums, object number 2006.170.177.
