拍品描述 翻译
China, 1279-1644. Standing with the body draped in loose robes, the figure's oval face is framed by pendulous earlobes and features painted eyes below gently arched brows, centered by an urna. The bow-shaped lips, accentuated in red, lend a composed expression. The elaborate coiffure, swept into a tall chignon, is adorned with a floral headdress and backed by a halo. The left hand is raised, partially veiled beneath a fold of cloth, while the right remains concealed within the sleeve. The body is entirely gilt, except for the back.Provenance: From a private estate in Switzerland. Condition: Good condition with old wear, expected minor age cracks, few small repairs to the neck and sleeves, rubbing to gilt and pigments, tiny losses, few small chips, minuscule nicks, light scratches.Weight: 2.4 kg (incl. stand)Dimensions: Height 38.5 cm (excl. stand), 42.5 cm (incl. stand)Mounted to a modern wood stand. (2)An important innovation in temple construction during the Ming dynasty was the creation of molded clay and stucco backgrounds to the main altars. These backgrounds represented contemporary religious beliefs where sculptured figures of Buddhist and Daoist deities mingled and populated the heavens, creating a vision of paradise on earth within the confine of temple walls. One such floor-to-ceiling three-dimensional landscape from the Shuanglin Temple near Pingyao in Shanxi, believed to date from the 14th century, is illustrated in Ann Paludan, Chinese Sculpture: A Great Tradition, Chicago, 2006. pl. 324. Ann Paludan notes that this feature of Ming dynasty temples in Shanxi was due to the combination of rich patrons and skilled local sculptures, and did not survive into the Qing dynasty (see ibid. p. 474). Other examples of temple interiors recorded to have been constructed during the Ming dynasty are illustrated in Chai Zejun and Chai Yumei, Ancient Painted Statues in Shanxi Province, Beijing, 2008, pp. 330-387.The Xiaoxitian (Little Western Paradise) Temple and other temples in Shanxi Province including the Shuanglin Temple are profusely decorated with wood and stucco sculptures which have been particularly well preserved, partly due to beneficial climate conditions in the area. The temples range in date from the Liao period through to the late Qing dynasty, and due to the fragile nature of the material were subject to renovation from time to time. The Shuanglin Temple alone houses over 2,000 ancient painted sculptures and well-preserved frescoes dating from the Yuan to Ming dynasty, and is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.Literature comparison: For similar figures in Xiaoxitian Temple, Xi County, see Buddhist Sculpture of Shanxi Province, Beijing, 1991, pl. 31. See also the Ming dynasty stucco figures of bodhisattvas in the Shuanglin Temple, illustrated ibid., pl. 172.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 10 July 2020, lot 128 Estimate: HKD 800,000 or approx.
