TOEIZAN KAN'EI-JI TEMPLE, 18TH-19TH CENTURYPainted and inscribed in China, most likely for a Japanese Patron. Ink on paper. Depicting bodhisattvas and celestial beings from the Hall of Akasagarbha and Susiddhi, which are part of the Womb Realm mandala. Each page is finely painted with a different bodhisattva seated on a lotus throne, holding their accoutrements, and backed by a mandorla, and inscribed in Chinese with the deity's name, their position within the respective hall, and a Bija (karmic seed name). Inscriptions: a. One leaf (see fig. 1) with three Japanese stamps, 'The head of the temple ordered that this piece cannot leave the Kaisan-do Hall of the Toeizan Temple', 'From the 14th generation of the priest of Shinnyo-in, Kaisan-do Hall, Toeizan Temple', and 'People's aspirations for Japanese and Chinese classics were stirred in the library, and those in charge of subsequent affairs were asked to make a detailed record of the matter'. b. One leaf (see fig. 2) with the title slip inscribed in Chinese, 'Womb (realm mandala)', 'Hall of Akasagarbha', 'Hall of Susiddhi', and '12 scrolls'. Provenance: The Toeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple, Ueno, Edo (Tokyo), Japan, prior to 1874. Collection of Frances Gay Hersey, New Bedford, Massachusetts, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. Collection of Charles H. Pizzano, Medford, Massachusetts, acquired from the above, and thence by descent. One page is inscribed 'Frances G. Hersey. New Bedford 1874', and another is inscribed 'Property of Charles Pizzano, sculptor of Medford Mass'. Charles H. Pizzano (1893-1987) was an Italian-born American sculptor based in Medford, Massachusetts. Charles attended the Roman Art School under Professor G. DeBenedictis and the famous sculptor Angelo Lualdi, and eventually became a successful and well-known sculptor himself. Some of his pieces were commissioned for the National Cathedral, the Vatican, and Harvard University, among others. Condition: Good condition with old wear, minor foxing, creasing, browning, some pages loosened, few small losses, some tearing, and little soiling. Dimensions: Size 52 x 76 cm (the largest drawing), 30.5 x 22.5 cm (the album)Each drawing is pasted on a different leaf of a later album probably compiled by Frances Gay Hersey, New Bedford, in 1874. Some leaves with later inscriptions in English containing spurious attributions, and some otherwise empty pages at the end of the album pasted with newspaper and magazine cut-outs.These Buddhist drawings once belonged to the Kaisan-Do Hall of the Toeizan Kan'ei-ji Temple in Ueno, Tokyo, Japan, as evidenced by three official Japanese library seals found on the largest drawing of the group. The Womb Realm mandala, which serves as the basis for these drawings, is most prevalent in Japan and was introduced there from China by Kobo (774-835), the founder of the True Word (Shingon) school. The Womb realm mandala is one of the two mandalas of Esoteric Buddhism, the other being the Diamond Realm mandala. Derived from the Mahavairochana Sutra, it represents the fundamental principle of the universe, the Dharma body of Mahavairochana Buddha. The mandala depicts twelve great halls or courts, with the court of the eight-petaled lotus at its center. The present lot comprises the bodhisattavas and celestial beings of two of the great halls, namely the Hall of Akasagarbha and the Hall of Susiddhi. In 1625, the priest Tenkai erected a group of temples known by the name of Toeizan Kan'ei-ji in consultation with the shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, for the purpose of protecting the northeastern gate Kimon of Edo Castle, known today as the Imperial Palace. During the Edo period, it became the biggest temple in the nation. However, due to large fires in the Ueno war, many of the temple buildings were lost. The Kaisan-do is a temple within this complex, constructed in 1644, where its founder Tenkai Daisoujo is enshrined. Literature comparison:Compare a related album of iconographic drawings of the Esoteric Buddhist Pantheon of the Shingon sect, dated to the 18th century, in the Harvard Art Museums, object number 1972.86.1 through -.55.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Christie's Paris, 19 December 2012, lot 111Price: EUR 97,000 or approx.
