The shaft terminating in a loop for suspension. (2)Provenance: Collection of Dr. Ernst Senner, thence by descent. Each handle is inscribed in lacquer to the back with a collector's number 'SR 46'. Dr. Ernst Senner was the head of a development aid program in India and Nepal in the 1960s, during which he experienced the Tibetan exodus from China. While in Asia, he assembled an important collection of Tibetan works of art, which was published by Ursula Toyka-Fuong in the 1980s. A large part of this collection, comprising 450 objects, has been on permanent loan to the Museum Villa Rot in Upper Swabia since 1999. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, manufacturing irregularities, and natural imperfections. Light dents, few small nicks, occasional light scratches.Weight: 1 kg and 962 g Dimensions: Length 36.5 cm (each)The conch shell (Tibetan: 'dung'), a symbol of the voice of the Buddha, represents the transmission of Buddhist teachings. This conch trumpet is both an auspicious symbol and a ritual implement in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. During ritual performances, it is used as a musical instrument and as a container for water. The elaborate decoration of real conch shells, such as the present example, became prominent in the seventeenth century.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Bonhams Paris, 15 December 2022, lot 186 Price: EUR 6,120 or approx.
