拍品描述 翻译
China. The immortal is carved standing on a large openwork tree-trunk, supported by a crutch, a gnarly branch flanking her right, and with peaches growing from the sides of the raft. The underside finely carved in openwork with a branch. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon color with cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: From the private collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, New York. A label inscribed with Alan Hartman's dating 'XVIIC' is attached by a string to the present lot. Alan Hartman (1930-2023) was an influential American art dealer, who took over his parents' antique business in Manhattan and established the legendary Rare Art Gallery on Madison Avenue, with further locations in Dallas and Palm Beach. His wife Simone (nee Horowitz) already served as assistant manager of the New York gallery before the couple married in 1975, and together they built a renowned collection for over half a century and became noted art patrons, enriching the collections of important museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (which opened the Alan and Simone Hartman Galleries in 2013) as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Brooklyn Museum in New York. Alan Hartman has been described as the greatest antiques dealer of our generation, and was widely recognized as a world authority in Chinese jade, bronzes, and Asian works of art. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and two tiny chips to exposed areas. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks.Weight: 207.1 g (excl. stand), 263.2 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Length 15.8 cmWith an openwork wood stand. (2)Carvings depicting immortals on rafts embody a duality of meaning. The raft symbolizes not only a journey across the river of life or the boundary between the mortal realm and the divine but also evokes the many legends surrounding the immortals' pilgrimage to the sacred garden of Xi Wangmu in the Kunlun Mountains to obtain the Peaches of Immortality. This legend is further reflected in the peaches placed along the edges of the raft in the current lot. This carving clearly depicts a female figure, which likely points to this being a depiction of Magu. Magu is the female equivalent of Shoulao, the god of Longevity, and is often portrayed as a young girl. It is said that Magu had witnessed the ocean turn to a mulberry field three times, thus symbolizing her great age and confirming her title of goddess of Longevity. In many instances she is portrayed sailing on a log raft.Literature comparison:Compare a related jade group of a Daoist fairy with attendant on a raft, dated to the 18th century, 20.2 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 02.18.625.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 17 May 2017, lot 491Price: GBP 18,750 or approx. EUR 33,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A celadon jade 'immortal and raft' group with carved standExpert remark: Both works are of similarly hued celadon nephrite material and with a single immortal steering a raft having openwork branches, and both are accompanied by intricate stands.
