拍品描述 翻译
China, 1644-1912, circa 1780-1840. Decorated with brilliant polychrome enamels on a blue ground with lotus blossoms surrounded by leafy scrolling vines and archaistic taotie mask motifs framed by ruyi-bands. Each candlestick consists of four gilt bronze segments, each with a hollow bell-shaped base rising to a central bulb between two cylindrical sections supporting a large circular dish tray, set to the center with a tall tapering cylindrical neck below a smaller tray fitted with a metal pricket. The rims are decorated with an incised circumferential meander band. (2)Provenance: From the Estate of Richard J. Eskind, Nashville, USA. Richard J. Eskin (1930-2023) was a noted philanthropist, business leader and health care entrepreneur, and the husband of pioneering Tennessee politician Jane Eskin. During a long and storied career as a stockbroker and financial advisor, Eskind served as vice president and resident manager of the Nashville branch of the investment firm A.G. Edwards and Sons Inc. and later founded the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). The Eskins established several funds at the Community Foundation and remained active benefactors over many years.Condition: Good condition overall, with oxidation to the metal and wear to the gilt and enamels, primarily on the drip pans. One candleholder has a loose shaft, causing the top to sit slightly unevenly. Minor losses, nicks, and old fills, all consistent with ware and age. Weight: 6.019 kg Dimensions: Height 37 cm The taotie motif, a prominent archaistic design found on these candlesticks, originates from ancient Chinese bronzeware of the Shang (c. 1600-1046 BC) and Zhou (1046-256 BC) dynasties. Characterized by a symmetrical zoomorphic face with large eyes, the taotie is often framed with intricate geometric patterns. Scholars debate its precise meaning, with interpretations ranging from a protective emblem warding off evil to a representation of ritualistic or mythical significance in early Chinese cosmology. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), the revival of taotie motifs in decorative arts reflected the imperial court's reverence for antiquity, aligning with the broader trend of archaism encouraged by emperors such as Qianlong (1735-1796).Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams, London, 19 September 2006, lot 430 Price: GBP 6,000 or approx. EUR 14,300 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : A pair of cloisonne enamel candlesticks of typical form, Qing dynastyExpert remark: Compare a closely related pair of cloisonne candlesticks, of similar form and design, also dated to the Qing dynasty.
