Published & Exhibited: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, In Scholar's Taste, London, 3-12 November 2016, p. 58-59, no. 27 (part-lot).China, 19th-early 20th century. The vessel of globular form, supported on three cabriole legs, set with a curved spout of dragon shape with pricked ears, the handle curving above the cover and terminating in a beast head seemingly devouring the other monster, the sides incised with a band of archaistic scroll on a ring punched ground framed by raised borders. The cover neatly incised with a wavy pattern enclosing three ruyi shaped heads, and connected to the handle by a chain. Inscriptions: To the base, 'Wen' ('sterling'). Provenance: Ben Janssens Oriental Art, London, 2016. Ben Janssens opened his eponymous gallery in 1996 in London, specializing in early Chinese art. Previously he had been a director at Spink & Son. He also served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of TEFAF Maastricht. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small nicks, few tiny dents, soldering marks to one foot and the handle, light surface scratches.Weight: 98.7 g Dimensions: Height 9.3 cm, Width 8.5 cmThis type of delicately made miniature silver vessel represents archaic bronze prototypes dating from the Shang and Zhou dynasties and was intended for the local Chinese market.
