Description

ITTAN: A WOOD NETSUKE OF TWO SUMO WRESTLERS

By Ittan, signed Ittan sanjin 一旦 山人 to 刀
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), c. 1860

Finely carved as two wrestlers locked in combat, Sukeyasu in the front executing the kawazu gaku technique (one leg entanglement drop), as he coils his leg around the leg of Kagehisa, effectively using his weight to topple him. Each dressed in loincloths and their neatly detailed faces showing intense, strained expressions; the eyes minutely inlaid in dark horn. Signed to the back ITTAN sanjin to [carved by the old man Ittan].

HEIGHT 5 cm

Condition: Restorations to the feet. Otherwise excellent condition with minor expected wear.

The kawazu gaku technique was named after the renowned wrestler Kawazu no Saburo Sukeyasu. When his opponent, Matano Goro Kunihisa (Kagehisa), attempted to lift him by the loincloth, Sukeyasu countered by entangling his leg and bringing him down. In this netsuke, the wrestler in the back appears poised for victory, but the leg entanglement is already in motion—within moments, he will be lying on the ground, defeated.

Kyoryusai Ittan was reputedly born in Gifu, of Toba clan samurai blood. The connections between Nagoya and Gifu artists have recently been investigated by Kentaro Akatsu, who points out that these two centers, only thirty kilometers apart, should really be considered as one netsuke-producing area. Akatsu’s genealogical chart shows Tomokazu as a founding father of the Nagoya group of artists which included Ikkan, Ittan and Ichimin, who all produced similar netsuke. Late in Ittan's career he moved to Tokyo, where he carved figural netsuke of legendary subjects, but in the Nagoya wood fine surface detailing manner, likely working together with Hokyudo Itsumin. Later he retired to Nagoya, where he died according to Ueda Reikichi in 1877. The suffix sanjin means old (or retired) man, but it is clear that Ittan's age has not clouded his eye for comedy or composition.
