Edo drawn by Kuawagata Shōshin (Edo Kuwagata Shōshin hitsu) A Japanese woodblock print of an ezu (illustrated map), mounted as a hanging scroll, depiciting a bird's eye view of Edo. Signed (Kuwagata Tsuguzane hitsu); carver (Noshiro Ryuko koku) Seal in red (Tsuguzane) 69cm wide (with scroll); 37cm x 55cm (woodblock, unmounted) - PROVENANCE: Japanese Private Collection; English Private Collection - NOTE: Please note there is an impression housed in the Anthropological Archives, Smithsonian Museum, collection no. NAA INV 10000036 USNM Ethnology Catalog 398579; another in the Brooklyn Museum, from the bequest of Dr. Bertram H. Schaffner, collection no. 2023.38 Keisai's print serves as a remarkable example of an ezu (illustrated or picture map: 絵圖). Ezu were based on topographical maps from government-funded cartographic projects, which used Western surveying methods to create accurate maps. These maps were originally classified but, in response to growing public interest, the Tokugawa government (the bakufu: 幕府) eventually allowed publishers to release works like the "Great Illustrated Map of Edo" (Edo ?ezu, 1670) and the "Illustrated Survey Map of the T?kaid?" (T?kaid? bunken ezu, 1690). Some ezu also functioned as travel guides or souvenirs from journeys. These maps often blended traditional cartographic features with lifelike depictions of architectural and natural elements, including shrines, temples, castles, inns, commercial buildings, harbors, ships, rivers, roads, and bridges. This expansive, bird's-eye view of Edo offers both a panoramic perspective and a highly detailed topographic representation of the city. Mount Fuji dominates the scene, positioned in the distant center, surrounded by other mountains like Mt. Chichibu and Mt. Oyama. In the foreground, the Sumida River winds its way toward Edo Bay on the left. Several bridges cross the Sumida River (Okawa), including Okawa-bashi (Azuma-bashi), Ryogoku-bashi, Shin-Ohashi, and Eitai-bashi. As with many ezu maps, notable landmarks are visible. We can spot Senso-ji Temple, Shin-Yoshiwara (depicted on the map’s right edge, from Senso-ji Temple to the north, near Okawa-bashi and extending to Imado-bashi), and Ueno Kann-eiji Temple, with Shinobazu Pond located to the west of Okawa-bashi. At the mouth of the Sumida River lie the islets of Ishikawa-jima and Tsukuda-jima, with Edo Bay stretching toward Shinagawa in the distance. Just before Ryogoku-bashi, the Kanda River merges with the Sumida River. Edo Castle is positioned roughly at the center, just below Mt. Fuji, with its outer moat flowing into the Sumida River near Eitai-bashi. The Nihon-bashi Bridge can also be seen over the outer moat (Nihon-bashi River). Other famous locations, well-known from ukiyo-e artists, are marked with tiny labels on the map. This scarce and intricate map of Edo-era Tokyo provides a fascinating glimpse into the city's past, allowing us to visualize many of the landmarks immortalized by Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e masters.
