A CHINESE CELADON JADE AND PEKING GLASS MANDARIN HAT FINIAL Qing Dynasty 清 青玉北京藍料帽頂 Formed with a globular section composed of clear blue glass denoting the Third Rank, surmounting a domed filigree base decorated with shou characters, set with a tubular feather holder carving from pale celadon jade 10.5cm long - PROVENANCE: By repute given to Mary Hayley Bell (b. Shanghai, 1911-2005), the daughther of Francis Hayley Bell (b. Shanghai, 1877-1944), who was giving english lessons to Puyi, the final Emperor of China, this is referenced in her autobiography 'What shall we do tomorrow', 1969, and thence by descent. Mary Hayley Bell was born in Shanghai, China, where her father worked for the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. The family later moved to Tientsin (now Tianjin). An accomplished English actress and writer, Bell graced the Broadway stage in Volpone in April 1928 and again in The Shrike in 1958. Her film credits include Vintage Wine (1938) and the 1955 adaptation of The Shrike. Beyond acting, Bell was a prolific writer. She penned four plays: Men in Shadow (1942), Duet for Two Hands (1945), Angel (1947), and The Uninvited Guest (1953). Her novel Whistle Down the Wind (1961) was adapted into a 1961 film starring her daughter, Hayley Mills, and later reimagined as a stage musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, though with significant alterations to her original characters and storyline. Bell also contributed to screenwriting, co-writing the story and screenplay for Sky West and Crooked (1966), which was released in the U.S. as Gypsy Girl, and providing additional dialogue for Scott of the Antarctic (1948). She was later featured in Moving Memories (2000), a video documentary created by her son, chronicling the life of her husband. Francis Hayley Bell was born in Shanghai in 1877, the youngest of eight children of Frederick Hayley Bell, a wealthy English merchant. At the age of seven, he was sent to England for schooling, returning to China at 15 to begin working in various roles across the country. In 1896, he joined the Imperial Maritime Customs. By 1905, he had relocated to South Africa, serving as a trooper with the Natal Carbineers, and is believed to have taken part in the 1906 Natal Uprising in Zululand. Over the following years, Francis traveled extensively through Africa and Russia before returning to China. He became fluent in several Chinese dialects. In 1910, while studying the Fukien dialect in Amoy, he married Agnes MacGowan, the daughter of Christian missionaries. After achieving the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, he resumed his work with the Imperial Maritime Customs, this time stationed in Macao. At the end of 1930, he was appointed Customs Commissioner in Tianjin (then Tientsin).
