Description

A rare and large Cizhou-type white-glazed scraffiato 'Peony' vase, meiping, Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), the ovoid vase with a short narrow neck and everted rim, thickly covered with white slip through which the decoration has been carved down to the body to create a contrasting white-and-grey effect under an overall milky transparent glaze, forming a design of three oval cartouches each decorated with large peony heads borne on scrolling leafy vines, contained within wide plain bands and interspersed at the upper corners with large leaf trefoils, the foot encircled by a band of petal lappets and the shoulders by a band containing floral scrolls, 32.5cm highProvenance:London, Eskenazi, November 2003Victor Hauge collection, Falls Church, VirginiaPublished:Fujio Koyama, 'Hsiu Wu Ceramic Kilns in the Northern Sung Dynasty, China', The Bijutsu-Kenkyu (The Journal of Art Studies), Vol. VI, no. The lasting admiration for the unrivalled excellence of Song (960-1279) potters derives from two very different achievements: on the one hand the understated elegance of the refined green and white table wares, with their subtle tonal nuances and subdued decoration, and on the other hand the bold and striking appearance of black and white containers, with their swift and vivacious surface treatments with knife or brush in light/dark contrasts. The present meiping is a masterpiece of the latter category, which derives its beauty from the seemingly nonchalant sgraffiato carving, which in fact is skilfully laid out over the available space, with no awkward gaps or ungainly clusters, and the impeccable potting, manifested in its neat profile.
