Description

A Chinese pale celadon hardstone-embellished bowl, Qing dynasty, 18th or 19th century, the sides inlaid in various hardstones and jadeite with a band of alternating sprigs of cymbidium and lingzhi fungus below a wider band of exotic foliate scroll carved in low relief below the slightly flared rim, with sprigs of peach, finger citron and pomegranate also in hardstones just below the rim on the interior, the translucent stone of even, pale celadon tone, 16.5cm diameter, later wood standProvenance:Private CollectionChristie's New York, 16th September 1998, lot 159The distinct craftsmanship and stylistic elements of Hindustan jade which originated from the Mughal court, garnered Emperor Qianlong's admiration. He hence commissioned the Palace Workshops to emulate these foreign models while integrating traditional techniques. The production of such refined objects-often adorned with gold inlay and precious stones-was reserved for imperial use, far beyond the reach of ordinary court officials. The present jade bowl exemplifies this tradition, embodying the refined aesthetics of Middle Eastern decorative arts through its intricate floral motifs. For the inlaid decoration, compare a shallow handled bowl of Qianlong mark and period in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji, vol.6, Shijiazhuang, 1993, pl.59, 60 and 61. A jade bowl inlaid with a floral design in red and green stones, which had been preserved on Wutaishan in Shanxi province and is now in the Shanxi Provincial Museum, is published in Zhongguo wenwu jinghua daquan: Jin yin yu shi juan, Hong Kong, 1994, p.78, pl.233.清十八/十九世紀 白玉嵌百寶盌拍品來源:英國私人珍藏,1998年9月16日購自紐約佳士得,拍品159號
