Description

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE SILVER HEAD OF BUDDHA, MON DVARAVATI STYLE

Expert’s note:
The present head once belonged to an important silver figure depicting the Buddha, likely standing around 30 cm tall. Such sculptures from the Mon-Dvaravati kingdom are exceedingly rare, compare one example dated 8th-early 9th century, 39.4 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1993.387.6. See also a bronze figure of Buddha with a similarly modeled head, dated to the 9th century, 42.5 cm high, at Christie’s New York, 15 March 2017, lot 244 (sold for USD 68,750 or approx. EUR 79,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing).

Thailand, 8th-9th century. The full-face modeled with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, gently arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips, flanked by large ears, the hair modeled in large snail-shell curls and elegantly piled over the gently domed ushnisha.

Provenance: RR Collection, Belgium, acquired in the 1970s-1980s by the father of the previous owner at Galerie Moderne, Brussels, and thence by direct descent. A provenance statement by the previous owner, confirming the above and revealing the collector’s identity, will be provided to the winning bidder after full payment has been received.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, encrustations, tarnish, remnants of gilt, dents, nicks, scratches.

Weight: 303 g (excl. stand), 448 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 8.2 cm (excl. stand), 15 cm (incl. stand)

With an associated wood and metal stand. (2)

The Mon polity of Dvaravati was one of the earliest and most important societies in mainland Southeast Asia. Based around the Chao Phraya and Mae Klang River basins of central Thailand, the Dvaravati polity was known from early Chinese textual sources, as well as being mentioned in a single local inscription that dates to roughly AD 550-650. Due to the large number of Buddhist sculptures associated with the culture, it is most likely that the rulers were patrons of the Buddhist faith. The images of Buddha are heavily influenced by contemporary Indian sculptural styles, including the Gupta style based around the site of Sarnath. The facial features of the Mon Dvaravati Buddhist images, however, display arched, joined eyebrows which are unlike those found in India, and which are therefore characteristic of the Mon Dvaravati style. Compared to earlier and later Thai kingdoms, Dvaravati was relatively geographically and economically isolated, which contributed to the distinct qualities of its sculpture, such as the aforementioned eyebrows, the broad face, and the full, prominent lips.
