Description

A RARE AND MONUMENTAL SANDSTONE HEAD OF A MALE DEITY, KOH KER STYLE, ANGKOR PERIOD

Khmer Empire, 10th century. Sensitively modeled, the serene face with narrow almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils, gently arched eyebrows, a broad nose, and full bow-shaped lined lips, the finely incised hair arranged in six braided rows rising to a tall conical chignon decorated with a floral pattern and secured by a foliate tiara with a chevron trim. The stone with a fine, unctuous polish overall.

Provenance: From an old private estate near Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, obvious losses, chips, scattered nicks and scratches. Natural imperfections including age cracks – one with old fills. Old repairs to a small section of the crown.

Weight: 39.9 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 54 cm (excl. stand), 67 cm (incl. stand)

Koh Ker, which lies 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Angkor, was the capital of the Khmer Empire from 928-944. Koh Ker's sculptural style is thus distinct from those developed in Angkor's immediate vicinity. The stone sculpture, often monumental in size, is imbued with a heightened sense of movement and suppleness of form. The Koh Ker rulers adhered to the Hindu religion, especially the Shaiva sect.

Expert’s note:
Khmer heads of such imposingly large size as the present lot are exceedingly rare. Compare an even larger example (87 cm high), dated late 12th-early 13th century, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1924.41.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related sandstone head, Koh Ker, 37.4 cm high, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1923.95.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Related
Auction: Christie’s Paris, 12 June 2012, lot 330
Price: EUR 37,000 or approx. EUR 45,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A sandstone head of a male divinity, Khmer, Angkor Vat style, 12th century
Expert remark: Compare the related modeling and manner of carving with similar expression, facial features, and tall headdress. Note the smaller size (32 cm) and later dating.
