Description

? A SANDSTONE FIGURE OF VISHNU, PRE-ANGKOR, PHNOM DA STYLE, 7TH CENTURY

Published & Exhibited: The Chinese Porcelain Company, Ancient Khmer Sculpture, New York, 1994, p. 2.

Finely carved standing in samabhanga, the Preserver of the Universe dressed simply in a short sampot fastened at the waist by a thin belt, centered by a bulbous fold issuing two overlapping fishtail pleats. The face is carved with a serene expression, marked by almond-shaped eyes with neatly incised pupils, an aquiline nose, and full lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the head surmounted by a tall cylindrical mitre over the individually twisted locks falling in three tiers and appearing from beneath the banded cylindrical miter.

Provenance: The Chinese Porcelain Company, New York, 1994. A private collection in the United States, acquired from the above. Raymond Handley, Los Altos Hills, California, acquired from the above, and thence by descent to his wife Marsha Vargas Handley. Christie’s New York, 13 September 2016, lot 246 (label to base). Raymond G. Handley (1923-2009) partnered with Ray Renault in the 1950s to co-found one of California’s oldest and most successful real estate development firms. They were pioneers in shaping the early landscape of Silicon Valley, developing buildings for major tech innovators such as Intel and Raytheon, laying the groundwork for the region’s transformation into a global technology hub. Raymond Handley was a keen collector of art who traveled extensively, including the most remote parts of Papua New Guinea and Africa. In Mali, where his brother served as the Ambassador of the United States, he drilled more than fifty water wells for Dogon villages. His passion led him to establish Folk Art International/Xanadu Tribal Arts, an ethnographic art business which developed into the Xanadu Gallery in the late 1990s, located in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright building off Union Square, and continued by his widow Marsha Vargas Handley until her retirement in 2015. Having opened her first gallery in the Bay Area in 1973, she is an important figure in the Asian art world in her own right, serving as the president of the International Netsuke Society for over 16 years.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, scattered nicks and scratches, minor stains, small chips to exposed areas, few old repairs with associated minor fills.

Weight: 7,008 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 41.5 cm (excl. stand), 49 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on an associated modern stand. (2)

This image was created during the Pre-Angkor period, before the establishment of the Khmer capital around Angkor in the beginning of the ninth century. Stylistically, it follows the traditions of the later Phnom Da idiom (Phnom Da Style-B) of the second half of the sixth century.

Almost all found stone sculptures in the Phnom Da style seem to belong to the realm of Vishnu and his incarnations, like this example and the preceeding lot. The Phnom Da style seems also rather homogenous compared to other stylistic phases. As the presented Vishnu is already more stiff in expression, it is plausible to date this image towards the end of the Phnom Da style, into the seventh century.

Vishnu, the member of the Hindu triad (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) responsible for the preservation of the world, is recognizable through his high cylindrical miter and his four arms. Vishnu is a royal, martial deity and would have been holding three martial implements: a mace, a war discus, and a conch to serve as a battle trumpet. His fourth hand probably held a lotus bud, a generic symbol of divinity, or an orb, the symbol of the earth.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related sandstone figure of Vishnu, Phnom Da style, 7th century, 183 cm high, in the National Museum of Cambodia.
