Description

Each made from four cases, all signed Koma Kyūhaku saku, displaying one or more respective animals of the zodiac in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, kinji, togidashi, black, brown and red lacquer, kirikane and a few with inlays of aogai. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. All with ojime. (12) 1) Displaying two rats and two turnips (kabu) with foliage on one side, and a single rat and a turnip on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, tiny details of black and red lacquer and kirikane, the ground with hirame, on kinji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. An amber ojime. 2) Displaying an ox tied to a blossoming peach tree in front of a straw-covered peasant’s house on one side, and branches of red-blossoming peach tree above a creek and reeds on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, the tree trunk with fine and variously cut kirikane, on kinji with a little hirame. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A shakudō ojime with flowers in relief and details in gold, signed Michiaki. 3) Displaying a tiger by a rock underneath bamboo on one side and a landscape with a creek, rocks and bamboo on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, details of black and red lacquer and variously cut kirikane, on kinji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. An amber ojime. 4) Displaying two hares surrounded by foliage and susuki on one side, and a single hare surrounded by grasses, foliage and susuki on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie and black lacquer, details of red lacquer and some leaves embellished by aogai, all together on shibuichi-coloured lacquer with a little hirameji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A malachite-gree glass ojime. 5) Displaying a winding dragon in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie and red lacquer, tiny details of black and red lacquer and kirikane, on kinji with red flames and black waves in togidashi. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. An amber ojime. 6) Displaying a large winding snake under a pine branch, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie and a little red lacquer, on gyōbu hirameji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A few losses to the gyōbu. A silver ojime with cherry blossom in relief, signed Masayuki. 7) Displaying a horse with saddle underneath cherry blossom branches on one side, and a might blossoming cherry tree on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, details of black lacquer, the ground with fine grasses and fern, on kinji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. An amber ojime. 8) Displaying two female long-haired goats on one side, and a single ram on the other side underneath a large leaf-bearing tree, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, reddish brown and a little black lacquer, on gyōbu hirameji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A few losses to the gyōbu. A metal ojime in openwork. 9) Displaying a mother monkey with a kaki fruit in one paw and a young animal in front of her reaching out for the fruit on one side, and a single monkey seated in profile on the other side, in gold takamakie and hiramakie and a little black lacquer, details of red lacquer, on kinji with a little hirame in the lower portion of the inrō. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A carnelian-red glass ojime. 10) Displaying a proud rooster and a picking hen on one side, and a mighty pine tree spreading its branches on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie, details of black and red lacquer, the ground with fine short grasses and clods of earth in hirame, on kinji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A silver ojime in openwork. 11) Displaying two puppies on one side, and a single puppy on the other side, in gold and silver takamakie and hiramakie and black lacquer, on kinji with a little reddish hirame in the lower portion of the inrō. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. An amber ojime. 12) Displaying a boar sleeping underneath blossoming lespedeza (hagi) in gold hiramakie and reddish-brown lacquer, details of red and silvery lacquer, on a shibuichi-coloured lacquer ground with a little hirameji. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Koma Kyūhaku saku. A chalcedony ojime.
