Description

A Japanese hanging scroll depicting the Taima Mandara, This hanging scroll depicts the Taima Mandara, created using ink, colors, gofun, and gold on fabric. It is signed by Edokoro Sakon Sadatsuna, with the seal of Edokoro. The artwork is housed in a wooden box.At the center of this depiction of the Pure Land of the West, Amida Buddha is shown in meditation on a lotus throne, flanked by the Bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. Surrounding them are additional Bodhisattvas of lower rank. All are seated on a terrace built over a lotus pond, with more deities positioned on floating lotus flowers. In a symbolic scene, the faithful who have entered the Pure Land are depicted as children being reborn from the lotus blossoms. The central panel is framed by scenes from the story of King Ajatasattu and his mother. This painting is a reproduction of a large Chinese embroidered representation of the Pure Land from the 8th century, originally housed in the Taimadera temple in Nara, Japan. The Taima Mandara exists in various formats and has been widely reproduced in woodblock prints. What sets this piece apart is its signature. Sakon Sadatsuna, recognized for his many portraits of priests and Buddhist-themed works, is credited with this unique signed painting. A similar work, measuring 118.2 x 99 cm, is preserved in a private Japanese collection (Higuchi, p. 14). Sadatsuna used various signatures and titles, including the "Edokoro Sakon" title for works dated between 1664 and 1676 (Higuchi, p. 12-14), Literature: Graham, Patricia J.
