Renowned for her mastery of haiku (then called hokku), she is considered one of the greatest female poets in Japanese literary history. Her work is admired for its elegance, sensitivity to nature, and spiritual depth. In addition to her poetic achievements, Chiyo-ni was also a talented painter, and her art often reflected the same delicate beauty and insight found in her poetry. Some of her most notable haiku include "The Morning Glory", "Putting Up My Hair", and "Again the Women", which continue to resonate with readers for their vivid imagery and emotional subtlety. The Thirty-Six Immortal Women Poets (Nyobo Sanjurokkasen) is a canon of Japanese poets who were anthologized in the middle Kamakura period. The compiler and exact date of the canon's construction is unknown, but its reference is subsequently noted in the Gunsho Ruiju, volume 13. Five of the 36, Ono no Komachi, Lady Ise, Nakatsukasa, Saigu no Nyogo and Kodai no Kimi also appeared in an earlier anthology with the similar title Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry which dates from 1113 (late Heian Period). The poet Fujiwara no Kinto chose this original selection that preceded the Thirty-Six Immortal Women Poets.
