Description: A Printed Fine Wool Shawl in the Kashmir Style, C. Swaisland and Co., Crayford, Kent, c.1850, of rectangular form, the plain black field surrounded by a border of repeated polychrome botehs, end panels of interwoven botehs at either end, the whole surrounded by borders of foliate cartouches, tasselled ends, award label from the Paris Exhibition of 1855 stitched in one corner, 345 x 175cm (118 x 69in).Crayford was associated with the production of textiles since the 17th century and the last factory, David Evans which is also mentioned on the exhibition label, only closed in 2001. There are a number of 'Kashmir' shawls made by Swaislands in the 1840s-1850s, when the style was most popular, in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
