Intricate and profusely carved red lacquer vase. The color of red is deep and has a nice luster with an aged quality.The vase has a base of brass metal covered in a coating of a possible paper fiber. This coating is then covered with red lacquer. The lacquer is built up to a certain depth and then carved. The inner vase is covered in a black lacquer as is the indented base. The mouth has a quatrefoil shape. The lip edge is the brass metal. The mouth tapers to a rounded shoulder and a flattened round body. The body tapers quickly to a quatrefoil shaped base. The foot ring is again the brass metal. The red lacquer has been carved with front and back panels of garden scenes. The panels are framed by peony side panels and key fret bands top and bottom. Below the mouth are peony designs encircled by key fret designs. The lacquer coating has a nice soft, smooth, shiny feel.MEASUREMENTS 10 1/2a€ (25.7 cm) tall x 6a€ (15.2 cm) diameter. Weight 1 lb 2 oz (510 g)CONDITION The base does not rest totally flat. It looks flat visually but it rocks a bit when moved. There are no breaks. There is a tiny crack at the mouth rim. There are cracks in the inside black lacquer of the mouth. The vase underneath has some black lacquer losses.A visually stunning work of art. So much time has been used on this vase.
