The lid of the cylindrical box, which is possibly either for storing tobacco or a tea, is a tour de force. The entire surface of the lid is carved in a basket weave with three monkeys in the center; see no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil. The monkeys have been carved in relief and do not appear to be an appliqu??.The outer surface of the box itself has carvings of phoenixes that merge into each other. The edge of the lid has a repeating triangle design. The underside of the lid and the base of the box show the ring marks of a lathe. There is a raised disc the bottom inside of the box with a Japanese character painted on it. The box has a nice smooth feel. The finely-grained wood is a nice medium color.MEASUREMENTS 6 ??a€ (16.5 cm) diameter x 4 ??a€ (12.1 cm) tall. Weight 1 lb 1.9 oz (505 g)CONDITION Ita€?s in great condition.
