A very old, thinly potted porcelain blue and white saucer that has an abstract design of water weeds painted in under glaze cobalt. The cobalt is almost black.The round hand thrown saucer with sloping sides has been glazed with a thick, smooth slightly shiny glaze. The dish is very old, as the porcelain is light gray with a blue tinge. It has been painted in an almost black colored under glaze cobalt. The well is painted with an abstract design of water weeds. The back is painted with quick flourishes of cobalt. There is a cobalt ring painted at the rim and double rings above the central well of the saucer. The saucer has a shallow un-glazed rounded foot ring. The base is glazed and there are two cobalt rings above the foot.There is a mark in cobalt on the base. It also has the number a€?77.4.5a€ in red on the base edge. The dish was deaccessioned from the Portland Art Museum, and this was its inventory number.MEASUREMENTS 6a€ (15.2 cm) diameter x 1a€ (2.5 cm) tall. Weighs 7.4 oz (210 g)CONDITION There are four small rim frits on the mouth edge. There are no cracks, or breaks. The piece rings true. There are kiln flaws such as reserve spots and pimples.
