Detailed, elaborate, exotic tropical hardwood bookends. They are similar in size and general shape but each has a different garden scene design. They are indeed hand carved. The wood looks like mahogany with the grain and the reddish color. The carved scenes are of pagodas with scholars in a garden setting. The carvings are very detailed and show willow leaves, roof tiles, pine needles, clothing and facial features. The carving has good depth and contrast. The bookends were part of an expanding bookend with wooden slats. The flat back shows the four holes which attached them to the slats. The slats are gone leaving the two bookends alone. The ends themselves so not very heavy and so will not hold up heavy books well. They should hold lighter weight books fine. They are also very decorative. They have old green felt on the flat bases. They have the word CHINA stamped on the felt in black. They also have white and red paper labels with hand written Book Ends M537-388 10 75 PrMEASUREMENTS Each end is 6 ??a€ (17.1 cm) tall x 5 ??a€ (14.6 cm) wide x 2a€ (5.1 cm) deep.
