Well potted and expertly painted barbed rim Imari porcelain plate/shallow bowl with an under glaze cobalt central medallion of sun rays on flowers with butterflies or bees flying about. The red enamel contrasts nicely with the dark smoky blue cobalt.The sides of this hand thrown porcelain plate curve up to form a shallow bowl. The sides are slightly ribbed and at the tip of each scallop the rim comes to a bit of a point, giving the rim a barbed effect. The concave central medallion is decorated with sun rays, flying insects and flowers painted in under glaze cobalt. Lappets with scrolls, birds, grasses, and globes surround the central medallion. These are painted in red, green, blue and gold over glaze enamel. The rim has a gold edge with an under glaze cobalt line bordering it. The enamels and glazes feel smooth, thick and look shiny. There are cobalt blue stylized flowers on the underside with cobalt lines above the foot. The base is glazed with one cobalt line. The porcelain is refined having a smooth feel to the unglazed foot. There are a few pieces of grit on the foot. The glaze used is a nice bright white. . MEASUREMENTS 8 1/8a€ (20.6 cm) diameter x 1 3/8a€ (3.5 cm) tall. Weighs 13.2 oz (375 g) CONDITION There are no cracks, chips, or breaks. There is wear to the gilt edge. The enamels are fresh and bright. There are kiln flaws such as pimples, black spots, blue smudges, and reserves.
