A Japanese painted plate with a central design of butterflies in flowers. The painting is very fine and imaginative.The plate has a scalloped edge which continues to the central well with a nice ribbed effect. It has weight to it but is not overly thickly potted. Cobalt blue has been applied first with patterns and outlines. The plate was fired and then the over glaze enamels were painted on and the plate fired again. The border has intricate repeating designs of an iris, peonies, waves and object assemblages in cartouches. The central medallion has a lovely design of butterflies flying among flowers. The designs are in gray, green, and red, with gold and black used to accent and outline. The back has cobalt blue designs equidistant with blue lines above and below the foot. The glazes look bright and fresh and feel smooth. The plate has a shallow foot with an unglazed foot ring. The base is glazed.MEASUREMENTS 8 ??a€ (21.6 cm) diameter x 1 ??a€ (3.8 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 2.4 oz (520 g)CONDITION There are no cracks, chips, or breaks, and the plate rings like a bell. There is some wear to the gilding.
