Detailed and expertly painted Imari dish with an elegant and interesting painting of a magnolia tree in bloom and a crested bird on a blooming cherry tree. This dish portrays the beginning of spring.The porcelain bowl is scalloped with a raised foot. The bowl interior has two panels that overlap each other. The smaller panel is of a magnolia blooming and in bud and the larger panel shows a crested bird resting on an overhanging cherry tree in bloom and in bud. Above and below the panels are floral flourishes. The underside of the bowl has a repeating floral scroll and the mouth rim has a gilt edge. The glazes used are soft, smooth, thick and shiny. The cobalt under glaze used is a deep cobalt with lighter blue washes. Red and gold over-glazes are used to outline and accent.The foot ring and base center are glazed, separated by a wide unglazed ring. The foot ring has a geometric band circling above it. The base has single line circles on the base and above the foot ring. The bowl has a nice medium weight.There is a Japanese character in a box with red over glaze enamel and a cobalt blue mark on the base.MEASUREMENTS 5 ??a€ (14.6 cm) diameter x 2a€ (5.1 cm) tall.
