Description: Stucco. Gandhara, c. 3rd to 5th century
The Greek influence characteristic of Gandhara is evident in this expressively crafted head of a bearded dignitary or patriarch. Stucco works like this are rather rare as the material is not as durable. However, it allowed the artist more nuance than stone due to its plasticity, as can be seen in this work. The back area is typically unworked, as these stucco sculptures were invariably placed on walls. It is difficult to determine the exact time it was crafted, as the Taxila school for example was active even after the 5th century. Dark bronze base.
