Description: Miniature painting with colours and gold on paper. North India, Kashmir, around mid-19th century
This sheet comes from a Bhagavata Purana and could be an unusual depiction of a special incarnation of Vishnu in the form of Agni, the fire gid, without the usual iconographic appearance. The figure itself appears more like Krishna, who is not depicted as red however. The flames in front of the figure show the Srivatsa symbol of Vishnu. A delicately ornamental border frames the painting on three sides.
Dimensions: SIZE sheet 14.2 x 9.5 CM
Condition: Good, age-related condition
Provenance: From a German private collection
