Description: Terracotta. Peru, Moche culture, ca. 500 CE
Ovoid body on a slanted, flared foot. Very finely executed red painting against a beige background depicting two groups of trees slanted towards one another. Between them are four, very lively painted fish in two pairs placed perpendicular to one another. Waved lines suggest waters. Atop the conical, smooth neck sits a frog. Protruding from the curved handle is an entirely red, slanted spout. The Moche culture was located on Peru’s northern coast and experienced its golden age from around the 5th to 8th century.
